FTP Tutorial

This tutorial will try to explain the difference between FTP and Transloading, how to FTP and when it is better to Transload rather then FTP.

I will also try to dispel some myths about FTP.

First you will need to get a FTP program if you don't have one.
I recommend the WS_FTP program. It is more versatile and doesn't contain spyware like some of the other programs available.
You don't need to buy the Pro version. I like free and the company is generous enough to provide a free LE version for home users. It works very well for normal use.
You can download the LE version here;
WS_FTP LE

Now that you downloaded it let's go over a few quick questions. After that we will take our adventure into the world of FTP.

Question?...Is it hard to learn?
Answer...No. If you know how to transload you will find this just as easy.

Question?...When should I use FTP?
Answer...Use FTP to transfer files to and from your computer. If you want to transfer files from one web host to another you should still use the Transloader. Why? Let me explain some situations.
When you use FTP you are limited in the speed of your transfers by what type of internet connection you have. When you transfer files from one host to another you have to first download them to your computer via FTP then upload them to the new host. With a dialup connection this can take awhile if you have many files.
But when you Transload, the program uses the high speed connections of both hosts to make the transfer. If you you have cable modem or other high speed connection then the FTP program can be used especially if you want to transfer a whole directory.

Question?...Does the FTP program save copies of my site when I use it?
Answer...No, not really.
When you upload or download a file from your computer the FTP program will place a log file in the directory from which the file originated. This is to show you what files were transferred. If you later delete the file from your computer and don't have access to the one at your host you have no recourse but to redo it.
But if you made the file or your website on your computer and then FTP'ed it to your host it will still be on your computer unless you deleted it.

Question?...Is using FTP safe?
Answer...It is as safe as using a Transloader. But some precautions are needed.
Use a firewall. Remember that you are opening up your whole computer to the internet.
Don't go to places that offer you software if you first upload some software to them. This is a huge risk as they can easily take all your files or worse.
And ONLY go to FTP sites that are reputable!

Now that we covered a few basic questions let's get started.
